Chelsea look set to beat Liverpool in the race to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, according to reports in Germany. The Germany international has been widely backed to move to Anfield this summer after reportedly holing talks with Jurgen Klopp. However, Bild are reporting that Chelsea are set to activate Werner’s release clause which stands at just under €60 million (£54m).
The report also claims that Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is a huge admirer of Werner and views the striker as a key part of his plans. The 24-year-old has enjoyed a sensational season in the Bundesliga, scoring 25 goals in 29 games. Lampard made use of a clause in Olivier Giroud’s contract to keep the experienced striker at the club for another season. But the former Arsenal man is only expected to be a backup as Lampard aims to boost the quality of his starting squad. When asked about Werner’s future, Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann admitted there is not much the club can do to keep him there if he decides to leave. ‘There is nothing we can do about it. He knows what he has in Leipzig and also what he has with me,’ Nagelsmann said.
